My friend and his girlfriend have been dating for many years. They have been seeing each other since they met in the 8th grade. My friend finally decided to propose to his girlfriend a few weeks ago. Everyone was so excited, because we all thought that he should have proposed many years ago. My friend said that he wants to build engagement ring that is unique and that no other lady will have on her finger. Wow! His finance must be so excited. It was his engagement gift to her. She wants her to have the best ring that anyone could ever dream of and he is wiling to pay whatever it costs to make it. What a luck gal.

Uhhh I hate this already! Need help.?

I’ve been searching high and low for the right engagement ring to replace my existing one (it’s a long story). I basically know I want platinum, I’ve developed a hate for white gold because it turns yellow. I wear my rings rough and never take them off.

My problem is not matter how much I search on every "build your own ring" website including blue nile, adaimor, etc. I can never get the size diamond I would prefer in our budget. It’s ridiculous in my opinion to pay thousands of dollars for a ring. I know I want a diamond, I would not be happy wearing a moissanite or a colored stone but I want the the look of a 1 carat. I’ve seen those halo rings and they look pretty but the settings are so expensive and the ones that sell them in palladium have the expensive diamonds. I really don’t want to get a setting from one site and diamond from another it seems like so much hassle.

Any suggestions?

Honestly, you’re better off not using those sites. Use them to get photos of what you want your ring to look like and then go to jewelry stores in your area. Look up flea markets or jewelry exchanges in your area and bring the photos with you. Usually at those place there are lots of jewelers under one roof so they compete for your business and you can haggle the price down.

Consider the quality and cut of your diamond to save some money. You can get a much bigger diamond at a much lower quality and often to the naked eye most people don’t know the difference. Depends on whether you want this to be an investment or not. Get the platinum setting you want now, and then for an anniversary later on, your fiance can replace the diamond with an amazing quality one.

Oh, and if you’re near New York, there’s no better place than the diamond district which is where my fiance got my 1ct solitaire ring with 1 ct of channels set diamonds in the band for an amazing price.

ETA, OP Marie, White gold does turn yellow, because there is no such thing as white gold. White gold is yellow gold that is plated with rhodium and needs to be redipped in rhodium every so often to maintain the white color because the plating wears off. Look up white gold and rhodium dipping on yahoo search if you don’t believe it.

I’m not bitter, my ring is not plated as it is yellow gold, thanks though. And you’re just wrong. Which is why you have 5 thumbs down on your answer.

Newer rings are plated in rhodium, which is exactly what I said in the original body of my answer. Older rings aren’t but they aren’t as white as white gold rings today due to the rhodium. I DID look it up. AND asked my jeweler when I researched my engagement rings and wedding bands. And it’s also why ALLLL of the brides who have white gold rings in my online community of thousands on Long Island all have to have their white gold rings dipped.

Well, if you feel that heirlooms should not require replating, you won’t be happy with a rhodium plated ring, because rings are "high wear" items, and no matter how high the quality of the plating, it will wear away over time.

But if you love today’s brilliant, dazzling, ultra-white diamond-like look, recognize that you simply can’t get it from an unplated ring, and you never could. No matter how well white gold is made, a metal which is about half gold (which is yellow) can never even come close to offering the flashy glint of rhodium plating. Yes, your grandmother’s ring stayed white for decades and never ever needed plating, but it was never dazzling like today’s rings — it was white enough for people’s taste in a different time, but it is not white enough for many people’s taste in this age of "bling". How can I remove hard water stains from gold/diamonds?

We have very hard water with no water softener. Over the past year, my engagement ring has built up what seems to be stains from the iron in the water. My diamond looks yellow, and it isn’t supposed to! I’ve tried jewelry cleaner & had it cleaned at the jewelry store with the ultrasonic, but it’s not working. What can I use that will not harm the gold or diamonds?

This is my first animation. It took 200 hand drawn pictures and about 60 hours to make. I made it for a filmmaking class and it was entered in the 2009 Signal To Noise competition. I’ll know in two weeks how I did!

The animation features a natural utopia- a forest going through the seasons- until the forest is paved over to build a shopping mall. Deforestation is a serious issue. When we destroy an environment, we can never get it back and niether can the wildlife that used to live there. We’re also contributing to the destruction of the ozone layer (Trees reduce carbon dioxide emissons and building over them definately does not) which contributes to Global Warming.

I own nothing other than my ideas and drawings. So I guess that actually means I own everything except the music, “Big Yellow Taxi.” That belongs to the Counting Crows, I believe. And Joni Mitchell, the original artist.
