A few weeks ago a friend of mine and I went shopping. He was looking to see if he could get an engagement ring price. He had been looking around for quite some time, but had never been to the jewelry store that I suggested. He was very pleased with the cost and decided to buy it. It was an exquisite ring and I am sure his girl friend will love it. He plans on proposing to her over the weekend while they go away to their lake house. I am not sure what he has planned, as he refused to tell me that part. I am so excited for him.

The norm on engagement rings is to spend 20 percent of your annual gross income. How ever there is always other factors to consider since you are buying something that not only will it last forever but will remain in her heart for the rest of her life. Another factor you should consider is that is she really the one? I remember my first engagement as well as my second, the second was a lot easier since I knew what to expect. The easiest way to decide is to really find out what styles and cuts she likes by asking her friends, they would be more than happy to help but do not let them intrude too much if you know what i mean. another factor to consider is what can you really afford? I know some people that only make minimum wage and that barely gets them any decent diamond ring. Knowing ahead of time these and do not forget to take into consideration what she brings to the table. That is a big factor in knowing if you are just going to spend just the 20 percent of your annual gross income or if you will spend more than the 20 percent of your annual gross income. So in order to calculate what to spend for an engagement ring always consider that the expected amount is 20 percent of your annual gross income and I would add another 10 percent to that if she really and truly deserves it. Where can I find a decent diamond engagement ring for a good price?

I’ve been told to stay away from Retail Stores and maybe check out Pawn shops…but I’m afraid to get dup’d by one of them since I’m not going to be able to tell the difference between a diamond and a cubic zirconium. What to do?

Online! The online stores have really small overhead costs so they don’t overcharge you. My husband bought my engagement ring from Union Diamond, and when he got it appraised he found out that he only spent 75% of the estiamted value.

Blue Nile is highly regarded. My SIL’s ring is from there and it’s beautiful. I suggest you set a budget, educate yourself about diamonds, and then start shopping.

Also, as a point to the answer above mine: EGL certifications aren’t considered good. GIA is the largest company around and is well-respected, and if you are getting a round diamond AGS certifications are great.

Becks Canvas 2008 – The Winner – Tom Price Interview

This year the overall winner was Tom Price (http://www.tompricestudio.com/) Tom Price, 26 is an alumni of Sculpture (2006). Subsequent to this, he received a First Class BA (Hons) Sculpture from Chelsea College of Art in 2004 and currently works from his South London studio, in Brixton.

In April 2008, Price exhibited a solo presentation of his art at the NEXT Art Fair, Chicago and will also be showing work at the 'Personal Freedom Centre' in October during Freeze Week at the Hales Gallery. Other awards include receiving the Sir John's Cass Bursary, which allowed him to study at the Royal College of Arts.

Price is now working on new sculptures and continues to explore different materials and formats.
